Rising from still water, a cluster of weathered snags stands like a quiet congregation: pale, sculptural, and silent against a forest gone nearly black behind them. Each form is doubled in the mirror-still surface below, deepening the sense of stillness and permanence. This is a study in contrast and quiet endurance: what remains, holding its shape long after the living tree is gone.
The composition is built on repetition and one exception. At left, a thick, curved stump sweeps low toward the water, deliberate as a gesture, with a tall bare spar rising behind it. Across the middle, three broken stumps stand upright like companions, and a fourth is cut by the right edge, as if the assembly continues beyond the frame. A low shoreline of grass and shrubs separates the pond from a wall of dark conifers, and below it the reflections hold every shape in a second, softer assembly, less substantial than the first. Texture, shape, and negative space decide how the scene is read, and the near-monochromatic palette keeps the eye on the forms.
